coasters, craft, paint your own pottery, painting, pottery, tips

Not always the cheapest gift (the cost entirely depends on the studio fee at your local paint-your-own-pottery shop), but a fabulous & personal creation is the hand-painted coasters. (The tiles are generally one of the cheaper items to paint.) Here’s a set I did as a wedding gift.

Monogrammed Coaster Set
I found an image I loved and designed the set in Adobe Illustrator, printed, and took a copy with me.

After a bit of scribbling on the back and tracing over my lines, I was good to go. Graphite burns off in the ovens, so pencil tracing your design is a good plan if you’re uncertain about your freestylin’ skillz. ;-)

Another simple way to go is to use a foam stamp (it also takes much less time). Most pottery shops have their own, but you can pick some up pretty cheaply at any craft store. With a stamp you’ll still need to go back over the design with a paintbrush, so the simpler, the better. (I usually take my own cheap brushes too; hundreds of little hands make for some gnarly brushes.)

Here are a couple sets I made that way:

Had I remembered to run by the pottery store yesterday, I’d have a newly glazed set to share, but that will have to wait until next week now.

Happy Friday!

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

Psalm 42:7

A friend has asked for a t-shirt with this verse on it. Here’s version #1:

(I’m still planning to try something else also, as I used a lot of ground on half of the verse.)

I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out. I used a fabric marker and fabric pastels. The right sleeve has the reference.

The Scarlet Letter

Art, craft, decoupage, monogram

For my friend Melanie’s birthday, I wanted to do something simple and use decoupage.

I’ve this half-finished, red wooden “M” chilling in my craft drawer of wooden letters for a while and thought it would be perfect. (Red is her favorite color, and yes, I do have a drawer that is full of wooden letters.)

Originally, I had planned to photocopy pages of a book she really likes (since the copy I have is borrowed), age the paper and decoupage the edges with that—but I’m both lazy and busy, so I used a book I had an extra copy of. My beloved Scarlet Pimpernel. Which I thought appropriate.

(The book was an old thrift-store hardcover with a great spine and cover. Unfortunately, they were taped together.)

So, I used my book scraps on the edges, repainted the front & added a modpodge layer on top and PRESTO! A book-lover’s monogram.

I also stole an idea off pinterest and added a wooden tag. I painted it with chalkboard paint and used book scraps on the back.
