The Princess and the Pea

She then laid twenty mattresses one upon another over the three peas, and put twenty feather beds over the mattresses.
Upon this bed the Princess was to pass the night.

The Princess and the Pea

About the Story

So this is one of the fairy tales that make sense when you read them as child, but seems entirely ridiculous as a grown-up. I mean, really: A real princess should be able to feel a pea or three underneath a tower of mattresses? And how awful would that be in real life if that was true? How could you walk? Or travel anywhere? A carriage ride or a walk on horseback would probably break your bones.

But now I’m rambling. There are a couple versions of this story as well (as with most fairy tales). In some, the princess is actually that sensitive and is all bruised up after a night sleeping over a pea. In others, she was warned that it was a test so she could fake it for her future mother-in-law.  The stories even vary on whether it was one pea or three. So now you more about the story. (You can read it here.)

About the Image

Jessica suggested this story to me a couple weeks ago for her shot, and I was really excited to get going on it. I didn’t even think about taking some shots of the setup, but I’ve got a couple where you can kind of see it. Laura, of http://www.afrugalchick.com, was our production assistant and helped with Jess’ hair and kept me from falling off our precarious table set up.

I knew I wanted to be outside, so I kept trying to find a park that would fit the look I wanted (my first choice location involved too much carrying of mattresses for my inherent laziness), and be within walking distance of my car. After a week full of rain, I decided that my best bet was to use my own backyard. Which turned out perfectly and made for an easy set up.

Here are a couple outtakes and “behind the scenes” pictures:

Here you can see the tables holding up the top mattress and the tarp underneath everything, as well as my reflector and the ladder I used for some of the shots.

Further Reading

Violet Eyes by Debbie Viguié is a sweet and easy read. It’s a cute little adaptation that’s part of a series of fairy tale retellings. The Surlalune link in the “About the Story” section also has some nice background information on the story.

Are the “behind the scenes” shots fun? Should I make an effort to get some for this series?

The Snow Queen

So, I already posted at least one of these pictures, but I thought it deserved its own page in the fairy tale collection. And I thought Alicia would appreciate her own post. ;-)

The Snow Queen

About the Story

So, the Snow Queen doesn’t actually do too much in the story, besides abscond with a little/teenage boy who wants to come with her. Which sounds entirely more awful like that than it does in the story. I always thought it was an odd choice for the title.

About the Photo

Alicia was very gracious and allowed me to commandeer her face and her bathroom for an entire afternoon to do this, after she fed me lunch. Part of the reason I asked her to do this was because I knew it would be a blast to do her makeup and she would enjoy the process. I think the hardest part for her was keeping the smile off her face during the photos.

I love the fierceness in this photo, but I think the one I included above has a nice wistfulness about it. (As well as being probably the most popular pic I’ve added to flickr. Over 100 views in one day! Big for me.)

Further Reading

Click here to read the story. It’s pretty long, so be prepared to dedicate a few minutes. I’m pretty sure I’ve read an adaptation of the story that I liked, but for the life of me, I can’t think of it. I may have to go home and search the bookshelves.

Snow White

Snow White

But hardly had she a bit of it in her mouth than she fell down dead.

About the Story

Some (sadly) little known facts: Snow White was not revived by a kiss! The queen tried to kill her first tightening her stay laces so she could not breathe, placing a poisoned comb in her hair and feeding her the poisoned apple. The dwarfs saved her from the first two, but were unable to revive her after the third. When the handsome prince came along and saw her in the glass coffin the dwarfs had made, he thought she was so beautiful that we wanted to take it (and her) with him. As it was being carried away, a piece of the apple that had been lodged in her throat came loose and she was alive again, and able to marry the (slightly creepy) prince. Good times, that.

While I applaud the Disney version for making the prince less shady, I hate Snow White so much in that movie that my favorite character is the queen. I sympathize. ;-)

About the Image

Not going to lie, this is my favorite shot in this series. I think Emily is a perfect Snow White. This was also the first and simplest shot out of the whole fairy tale theme. Some makeup, flowers, reflector to catch the setting sun, and some editing and voila! Done.

This is probably in my top five of fairy tale adaptations. I LOVE IT. You should too: Snow by Tracy Lynn

Tomorrow I’ll be posting all the images in succession, as they were presented. ;-)
